The beret is a clothing item added in the Royalty DLC. It provides a +10% increase to Social Impact, and meets the headwear requirements of nobles between Acolyte and Praetor rank.

Acquisition

As a complicated garment, Berets can only be made at tailor benches, and requires Noble Apparel to be researched in order to be constructed. A beret requires 35 of any textile, and 4,000 ticks (1.11 mins) of work.

Berets can also be purchased from traders or found on Empire Pawns.

Summary

A beret offers a +10% increase to Social Impact. Note: Social impact predominantly affects the Opinion bonuses and maluses pawn interactions can create, the success chance of SpeechesContent added by the Royalty DLC and some rituals.Content added by the Ideology DLC It does NOT affect trade prices, as that is instead dependent on Trade Price Improvement. Nor does it affect prisoner recruitment, beyond slightly hastening how quickly the prisoners like the warden, as that is instead dependent on Negotiation Ability.

To consider themselves properly dressed and avoid a -4 "Want <TITLE>-specific apparel" moodlet, nobles between the ranks of Acolyte and Praetor must wear a beret or one of the following alternative pieces of headwear:

Note that female nobles will receive a -5 "Wearing male apparel" mood debuff from wearing a top hat, while male nobles will receive the same penalty for wearing a ladies hat.

When worn by a slave,Content added by the Ideology DLC a beret increases the rate that suppression is lost by 5% per day. This stacks additively with all other forms of suppression loss rate offsets.

Analysis

Berets are luxurious headgear that offers a boost to social impact of +10%, but provide no armor or insulation. Only providing the same social impact bonus as the cowboy hat, berets are thus outstripped in that regard by every other social head wear. Additionally, it provides no armor and only a small amount of insulation. As such they are only useful for meeting the needs of nobles that specifically require a beret or worse, and even then it is outperformed at the social impact bonus by 2 times by the top hat/ladies hat. Its only advantages are that it costs only 35 material rather than 50, and that it is unisex, which makes using hand-me-downs easier. If you're bothering to use a social impact hat over a helmet however, this is likely not significant.
