The flak jacket is a piece of protective apparel. It provides protection to the torso and arms at the cost of a -0.12 c/s penalty to movement speed.

Acquisition

Flak jackets can be commonly found on Outlanders, Pirates, Imperial Troopers and Ancients. Additionally, they can be manufactured at a machining table, once flak armor has been researched. A flak jacket requires Steel 70 Steel, Cloth 50 Cloth and Component 1 Component and 233 seconds of work (14000 ticks) to craft, assuming baseline global work speed and no enhancements or hindrances to consciousness, sight, or manipulation.

Analysis

With low resource costs, accessible research, and the ability to be worn over flak vests, flak jackets can provide useful protection in the early game. However once sufficient devilstrand is available, typically by mid-late game, devilstrand dusters are strictly superior. They provides slightly more sharp and blunt protection, slightly more insulation as well as excellent heat protection, cover the legs, and eliminate the movement speed penalty. Other late-game materials such as Hyperweave and Thrumbofur offer similar effects. Due to the speed and coverage detriments, even dusters of strong leathers, like rhinoceros leather may be preferable despite offering slightly less protection to the upper body.
