Pen animals are those animals that are not trainable, are blocked by fences, and will roam if not confined to a pen. Building a pen, denoted by a pen marker, allows advanced oversight and control over animals penned there.

Mechanics

Pen animals are a subset of animals which can be tamed but are not trainable. All pen animals can eat live plants making them perfect to farm as cattle outside. Pen animals are passive, meaning that hostiles will not attack these animals, and vice versa. Unlike normal animals, pen animals can not be designated to an allowed area, instead they must be brought to a special zone known as a pen. A pen is defined by a pen marker and takes fences, animal flaps, and held open doors into consideration. Once a pen is established, an animal handler will lead pen animals to the designated pen. (note the animal handler needs an animals skill greater than or equal to minimum handling skill to lead the animal to the pen)

If a pen animal is not brought to an enclosed pen, they will slowly start to wander towards the side of the map. While they can be roped back to an unenclosed pen, they will keep on attempting to roam free.

Strategies

  • Pen in combination with auto-slaughter can be extremely powerful to reduce the amount of micromanagement done by the player. The use of pens and auto-slaughter is a necessity for any colony with the Rancher Meme Content added by the Ideology DLC
  • When choosing a pen animal to farm, you may want to consider animals that have more purpose than their meat. For example muffalos can provide wool and can act as a pack animal.
