The component assembly bench is used by smiths to create components, advanced components with components, steel, gold and uranium.
The following items can be crafted at the fabrication bench:

Requirements
Fabrication is often a highly sought-after technology, as it allows the player to create the ever-useful components and advanced components without relying on trade limits. It is recommended to plan ahead and gather the 2 advanced components required to build the fabrication bench before you research Fabrication. If you need advanced components, then trade with exotic goods traders, faction bases, and orbital traders are the most consistent. Quests can offer them from time to time.

In the late game, demand for advanced components can be very high, especially if you are constructing the ship. They take a long time to make, so it is recommended to have multiple fabrication benches with multiple crafters for their production. Deep drills + ground-penetrating scanner or the long-range mineral scanner can help your colony get the minerals needed on its own. Fabrication itself can be used in many valuable projects, like charge rifles, power armor, and bionics.

Component assembly is required before the table can be built.

Components
 +

 +
For the sake of making components, this is a stopgap measure at best. Constructing components from raw steel is so expensive that it is better off selling their steel to purchase components from traders directly. Those suffering a component shortage would be better served not building the component assembly bench at all, as the bench itself requires an extra steel just to pay for its own components.
 +

 +
Those in search of components are generally better off purchasing them from traders or establishing caravans to trade with nearby settlements. Compacted Machinery may even be found on caravan ambushes or faction base raids, which can be mined out and added to the convoy as a semi-renewable source of components, though they are real heavy (at 0.6 kg) and can easily add to the burden. <br>
 +
If you happen to have scavenged some non-deadman's apparel you can pick these up and sell at traders in exchange for components. This is a more weight-efficient way to carry value than directly hauling components.

Advanced components
 +

 +
Despite the cost it is usually necessary to make advanced components using this as advanced components are much harder to come by than regular ones. They don't serve any other purpose other than the ship as of the latest version so this should be done only in preparation of building one.

With a great demand for components in most colonies, component assembly is a great way to train colonists' crafting skill, though both types of component have a minimum crafting requirement. Good smiths provide quality weapons and armor for your colony and are valuable to any colony.

* 0.18.1722 - Cost was reduced from 400->200 steel and 20->14 components. The skill requirement is also reduced to 8 from 10. The recipe for advanced components has also been added.

* 0.19.2009 - The component assembly bench renamed to fabrication bench alongside a rework. New recipes using it were added. It also now requires advanced components to construct.

Prior to Beta 18, it costed 400 steel and 20 components to build, and requires a smith with crafting skill 10 to operate.

In 1.0 it was renamed from the Component assembly bench to the Fabrication bench, and is now used to make bionic body parts and power armor.
