The bowler hat is a clothing item that covers the head. It provides a +15% increase to Social Impact, minimal armor for the head and ears, and modest insulation.

Acquisition

As a complicated garment, bowler hats require Complex Clothing to be researched and can only be made at tailor benches. A bowler hat requires 20 of any textile, and 1,800 ticks (30 secs) of work.

Bowler hats can also be purchased, or stripped from Outlanders.

Summary

A bowler hat offers a +15% increase to Social Impact. Note: Social impact predominantly affects the Opinion bonuses and maluses pawn interactions can create, the success chance of SpeechesContent added by the Royalty DLC and some rituals.Content added by the Ideology DLC It does NOT affect trade prices, as that is instead dependent on Trade Price Improvement. Nor does it affect prisoner recruitment, beyond slightly hastening how quickly the prisoners like the warden, as that is instead dependent on Negotiation Ability.

When worn by a slave,Content added by the Ideology DLC a bowler hat increases the rate that suppression is lost by 5% per day. This stacks additively with all other forms of suppression loss rate offsets.

Analysis

Bowler hats are almost identical to cowboy hats, with only a few minor differences:

  • Bowler hats boost social impact more (+15% vs. +10%)
  • Bowler hats offer less insulation from heat (40% vs. 50% )
  • Bowler hats cost fewer materials (20 vs. 25)
  • Bowler hats are slightly less valuable (reflecting the smaller number of materials required)

Given the similarities, the choice between cowboy hats and bowler hats is mostly one of style.

Social Impact

If a social impact boost is required, the bowler hat provides a larger boost than the cowboy hat for fewer materials and is the better choice in RimWorld Core. However if the Royalty DLC is installed, the coronet and top hat provide a larger bonus.
