'''Bonsai trees''' are decorative [[plants]] added by the [[Ideology DLC]]. They must be grown in [[bonsai pot]]s. Both tree and pot are available when the [[Research#Tree_sowing|Tree Sowing research]] is completed. It can satisfy ideoligious requirements. With a much longer lifespan than either roses or daylilies and similar beauty, bonsai trees may be a good alternative for decorating your base.

Like all [[decorative plants]], they only require 30% light to grow, allowing them to grow in the light of a [[torch]] or [[standing lamp]], instead of requiring a [[sun lamp]].

== As a wood source ==
Bonsai trees are a very poor source of wood. They have the lowest wood-per-work of all [[trees]], being over 3x more work inefficient than even the lowly [[fibercorn]], which takes no research at all. They're also very middle of the road when it comes to wood per day, coming 10th overall. They also must be planted in bonsai pots, and cannot be planted directly into the ground, requiring an additional resource investment. Finally, they will not be auto-harvested when fully grown, so the player must manually designate them for chopping, adding inconvenience on top of their inefficiency.

That said, bonsai trees do have a few advantages over other sources of wood. Like fibercorn, they only require 30% light, and can be grown under roofs. In situations where the soil cannot be planted on at all (such as in the [[sea ice]] biome or on hard rock), they can still be planted into the pots and grow normally. While fibercorn is similar in this aspect, as it can be planted in [[hydroponics basin]]s, bonsai trees provide a superior wood-per-day (at the cost of an inferior wood-per-work) and do not require power to grow. Finally, its +15 beauty means that, when resources are scarce, they can double as both a source of beauty and a source of wood.

Please note that when grown in a 50% light level (such as under a [[standing lamp]]), bonsai trees will only grow at 29% of their normal speed. To achieve their optimal growth speed, they must be planted in sunlight or under a sun lamp.
